The Arizona Outlaws and the Arizona Footy League were proud to kick off our preseason to our forthcoming 2018-19 Arizona Footy League Winter Season last night at Benedict Sports Complex in Tempe Arizona last night. With a months break from footy players were itching to get out on the field, showing up 30 minutes before the lights come on, which is almost as unbelievable as that time Ryan Luto thought he could make a 6:00 AM flight after regionals and a night out on the town.
With players raring to go, captains Rob Luto (Tombstone Marshals) and Morgan Lee (Tempe Devils) selected teams. Luto took the small and speedy approach while Lee took the tall and experienced option which in the end proved to be the wiser option.
The Tombstone Marshals came out roaring and managed to slot their first goal within 30 seconds of the opening bounce.
There was no stopping the cousin duo of Joey Luto and Rylee Luto as the repeatedly cleared the ball out of the centre and found their target, Mathew (E.M.) Sovereign at full forward who managed to slot it through the middle multiple times. The Tempe Devils were left scoreless in the first quarter despite several shots on goal.
After shaking off the cobwebs the Tempe Devils returned to the field in the second quarter uplifted by Matthew Lambert’s inspirational quarter time talk. With a fire in their belly and a new approach to driving the ball deep into the forward to skipper Morgan Lee, the Tempe Devils managed to regain lost ground from the first quarter and head into halftime with scores tied thanks to the likes of John King’s two goals from the deep forward flank at 45 meters out on the run.
With a solid backline of Matthew (Porn Star) Lambert, Tony (Iron Man) Starks, and Peter Abernethy the Tempe Devils held the Tombstone Marshals to one goal as did the Marshals hold the Devils to just one goal in the third. With three minutes left on the clock, the young talent Robbie Yackley, pushed the ball deep into the forward line falling just short of the goal which the big man Aaron Tislow leap into the air with his butter fingers and found skipper Morgan Lee crumbing the ball when new recruit Dante Evens landed on the skippers ankle which may prove to be a career ending injury for the young Aussie. After being chaired off the field from players on both teams the game went on.
With scores tied up heading into the last quarter, a player down both teams went head to head with the girls stepping up as the Marshal husband-wife duo of Javier Lopez and Ana Lopez worked with each other to score and set up goals for the Marshals. Audra Woodward kicked her first goal for the season in the dying minutes of the game from the right forward pocket in what can only be described as a spectacular display of skill. Unfortunately, the Marshals were undone by the likes of Ryan Luto running through the centre of the field like the little engine that could, to find Amanda Mora in the forward line who went back to kick the game-winning goal.
Come on down to our next preseason game on Friday the 7th of September at Tempe Sports Complex from 8:00 PM to join in the action, everyone is encouraged to join in the games despite skill level, age or fitness level.
